Born 1977 in Biel / Bienne, Switzerland. Thilo launches his career with Swatch where he works for three years as product manager and where he gets an extensive insight in design development. In 2002 he enrolls at the University of Applied Sciences of Northwest Switzerland and graduates in 2006 as Industrial Designer (Dipl. Designer FH). He starts his design studio in Zurich during the final years of his studies and begins to work as an independent designer right away. After three years of client related work, Thilo signs in for the MAS Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at ECAL. After his graduation and in parallel to developing his design studio, Thilo stays within the department as teaching assistant for another two years before getting promoted and taking over the position of an academic lecturer in 2011.
Today, Thilo runs two firms in Zurich: Thilo Alex Brunner Ltd. and Brunner Mettler Collabo Ltd. with his associate Jörg Mettler. While Brunner Mettler Collabo concentrates on classic industrial design mandates, Thilo emphasizes with his own studio on experimenting and his long-term signature projects. He is awarded the Federal Design Award in 2011 for his commitment to the design heritage of the Swiss Army Knife and in 2013 the Design Preis Schweiz for his detailed work on the On running shoes brand. In 2014 he wins with his associate a Red Dot Award for the design of a new line of thermo bottles for renown Swiss producer SIGG. Thilo advocates the quality of Swiss functionalism and minimalism but always likes to mix it up with a fresh twist – «The word functionalism begins with fun, after all», he says.
